DSC03424 Find the Pick of the Patch 2011 We spent the morning making our annual trip to Coulter’s Farm in Indiana.  We love the minimal frills and small town feel of Coulter’s.  Plus, I can’t help but marvel at how the girls have grown when we line them up in front of the “How Tall This Fall” sign each year. Picture 2 300x269 Hop on over to one of these great Easter events! There is something about the arrival of Peeps on the shelves that solidifies that Spring is finally here.  Not to say the cold weather is over.  I for one leave my snow shovel out until May.  For some reason I fear that if I put it away sooner, I will jinx the good weather and Mother Nature will punish me with a little Spring fluffy stuff.  I prefer fluffy cotton tails to fluffy snow this time of year!  In fact, we have a little cotton tail bunny living in our yard who has been making quite a few appearances the past few weeks.  My kids have appropriately named him/her Hoppy!

If you don’t have a Hoppy of your own, here are a few of the places in Chicago where you can see the Easter Bunny and celebrate Easter:

Are you looking for some fun outdoor fun, and still need to get your Christmas Tree?  Try cutting dow your own tree at a Christmas DSC02645 150x150 Outdoor fun, and a Christmas tree to boot!tree farm.  This past weekend, we visited two tree farms, Gengel (38614 North Fairfield, Lake Villa) & Family Christmas Tree Farm (24774 W Petite Lake Road, Lake Villa).  The plan was not to visit two farms originally, but truth be told, Gengel had a VERY small and “Charlie Brown”DSC02671 150x150 Outdoor fun, and a Christmas tree to boot!collection of trees.  We had a great time walking the wooded path to the trees, and had our first family snowball fight, but decided to head down the road to Family Christmas Tree Farm to actually get our tree.

Family Christmas Tree Farm is a great little family farm. You can borrow a sled, take a hay ride toDSC02676 150x150 Outdoor fun, and a Christmas tree to boot! the fields, feed goats, visit their 1837 barn and cut your own tree or by a precut tree. My kids had an amazing time being pulled on a sled around the farm.  There are winding paths between fields with lots of trees, streams and plenty of fresh air.  It was a great escape from the city, and the fresh snow added to the fun!

Unlike the standard store bought tree, cut-your-own trees tend to not be as “perfect.”  What the trees lack in symmetry, the overall experience makes up for in fun!  Plus, if you want a more perfect tree, they offer pre-cut ones that are amazing! The staff (owner & family) were very friendly and helpful.  They trimmed, shook, netted and helped us get the tree on top of our car.

All of the tree farms in Chicagoland are an hour plus from the city.  Most, including the two I mentioned above, don’t have their own website, so the best place to find one near you is Pickyourownchristmastree.org.  Last year we visited Richardson Farm, and had a great experience too.  Click here to check out my blog post from that visit.

Halloween Candy 21 150x150 Remove temptation & send your leftover Halloween candy to the troops! If you are like me, the sooner this Halloween candy leaves my house the better. I was just munching on a piece before I started typing this post, so lets just say will power is not high on my list of attributes.

Don’t get me wrong, we had a great time collecting it, and the girls and I are thankful to all who handed it out, but really…how much candy do two toddlers really need to eat!  That’s why we are wrapping up all of our remainng candy tomorrow and shipping it along with two homemade cards to the troops via Operation Gratitude. Check out their cool YouTube video showing the 21 tons they collected last year and the troops enjoying it.

Not only will I be removing temptation, but I can teach my kids a little something about giving back to the community to boot!

Here’s how it works.  Operation Gratitude welcomes all left over Halloween Candy for their care packages.  All you have to do is wrap it up and ship it prior to December 3rd to:

I’ve was doing a bit of research on carving pumpkins this morning, and I thought I would share what I learned.

10 tips below on how to select, carve and preserve your pumpkin

    1. Good carving starts with the right pumpkin. Choose one that is fresh (with a sturdy stem and no bruises) and that has a flat bottom (so it won’t roll).
    2. Plan on carving no earlier than a day or two before Halloween. And remember to bring your pumpkin indoors on nights when the temperature is expected to drop below freezing.
    3. Serrated metal saws (like the ones found in carving kits) are a safer alternative to knives.
    4. Carve away from yourself, and keep a portion of the knife blade in the pumpkin and use slow, steady saw strokes.
    5. Cut the lid at an angle so the outside diameter is larger than the inside. This prevents the top from falling into the pumpkin when it shrinks.
    6. If you make a mistake, you can reattach a section that was accidentally removedjack o lantern 3 150x150 10 Tips for carving & preserving the perfect pumpkin by using a toothpick to pin it back in place.
    7. To prolong the life of your pumpkin, soak the cleaned pumpkin for a couple of hours in a bleach water solution of 1 teaspoon bleach to 1 gallon of water.  The pumpkin soaks up the water and it makes it firmer and the bleach kills the bacteria that causes mold.  Dry thoroughly, then rub inside and out, including all cut edges, with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to prevent shriveling. If the pumpkin begins to shrivel, repeat the process. The soaking time will depend upon how dried out the pumpkin has become.
    8. If you plan to use a candle and  like to leave the lid on, create a chimney. First, leave the lid on for a few minutes while the candle burns, then make a small hole where the lid has blackened.
    9. Sprinkle a little cinnamon inside the lid. When you light the candle, your jack-o’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie.
    10. For a safer, but less fragrant option, try a battery-operated flameless candle.

The Fall weather is here…or at least coming, and there are two great Fall Festivals this weekend – St. Alphonsus Octoberfest and Lincoln Square Apple Fest.  Both have kid friendly activities and plenty to keep the adults happy too.

The Lincoln Square Apple Fest is on Saturday, September 25th from 8am-4pm.  The Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce promises apples by the bushel and cider by the gallon. The event will have live music, children’s games, cooking classes, farm-fresh fruit pies, cider, candy apples and more.

The St. Alphonsus Oktoberfest has a Kinderfest on Sunday, September 26th from 11am-2pm.  Event includes bounce house, cookie decorating, face painting and lots of other family friendly activities.  Plus, there is plenty of beer and sausages for the adults.  Parents get in free until noon.  We went last year and had a great time.

We are going to try and hit both events.  Hope to see you there.

I was thinking to myself this morning about Mother’s Day, and how I wanted to spend the day.  My girlfriend Ami, and fellow blogger, did a great post called Luxury Redefined.  She talks about what we used to consider a luxury and what now, as mothers, we consider a luxury. This got me thinking about how I would love to spend Sunday with my family, but would also love to enjoy some of the “mommy” luxuries I long for…things like going to the bathroom by MYSELF, sleeping in past 7:15am, and call me crazy, but not wiping a tushy for an entire day.  Now that would be a luxury!

In addition to a bit of me time, I would be lying if I said I did not want a gift.  Call me materialistic, but I love getting gifts.  They don’t have be extravagant, just thoughtful.  My husband does not look at shopping as a hobby, so read on honey (and the rest of you hubbies out there)…here are a few hints.

Jewelry to remind you of your little one:

Twinkle Twinkle Little One (3224 N. Damen) has a great selection of unique jewelry that will remind you of your little ones.  Everything from a victorian edge ring and beautiful leather bracelet with your little ones face on them to a beautiful silver name tag necklaces.

    - Custom Silhouette Jewelry – I found a couple of stores on Etsy that will make a custom charm out of your little ones silhouette.  Lucky Me Beads does them in vintage brass and Stella and Hodge does them in Pewter.  So precious!

    Jewelry Just For You:

    - Another friend of mine, Hadley Denny, is also a local jewelry artist.  She makes beautiful, organic pieces designed with shells and semi precious stones in sterling and gold.  Her work can be found at Elizabeth Grace (2438 N. Clark), or you can contact her directly at hadleymdenny@gmail.com.

Stroller Envy  & Other Gifts For Mom’s On The Go:

    - Last year my hubby gave me these amazing little speakers for my iPhone, iHome Rechargeable Mini Speaker.  They are perfect to bring along to the beach or a picnic with my girls.  Now we can have a dance party anywhere.

    - The Today Show recently did a story on tricking out your stroller.  Who knew you could pimp out your stroller?  A few of these can be found at Giggle (2116 N. Halsted) including the Strollometer and Valet Stroller Clips, which I have and love.

Untitled1 150x150 Looking for your perfect Christmas tree, try cutting one down at Richardson Farm.On Saturday we ventured out to Richardson Farm (60 miles Northwest of Chicago) to cut down our own Christmas Tree.  With a light dusting of snow on the ground, it seemed like the perfect day to find Clare’s first Christmas tree.

I have fond memories of wandering around row after row of trees as a kid trying to convince my mom, dad and sister that the one I chose was the perfect “one.”

Richardson Farm is a charming, family owned and operated farm North West of Chicago.  Once we arrived, we were greeted by one of the owners who explained the process.  We then grabbed our saw and jump on the flat bed wagon pulled by a giant tractor for a short ride out to the trees. They have all the regular varieties (Firs, Spruce, White Pine, etc.) to choose from.

My two year was in heaven.  She was darting between trees and running up and down the rows of trees singing and clapping.  After evaluating and inspecting a number of contenders, we finally found “our” perfect tree.  My daughters got a real kick out of watching my hubby cut it down (be prepared for a bit of mud on your knees and sap on your hands), and the three of us carried it to the edge of the field where we were picked up by a caroling tractor driver.  He had our entire flat bed full of families sining the 12 Days of Christmas.

Once you get back to the farm, they shake and bale the tree for you while you step inside for free hot cocoa and homemade donuts.  They sell wreaths and Christmas decorations too.

Although we loved the family/country experience Richardson Farm offered, I have to admit that I felt the trees were a bit small.  We usually get a HUGE tree, and most of them were around 6 feet or smaller.  In addition, the prices were a bit higher than Home Depot.

    Here are the details:

    • Where – Richardson Farm (9407 Richardson Road, Spring Grove, IL)
    • Hours of Operation – November 27 – December 23 from 9am-6pm daily
    • Cost – Scotch & White Pine $44, Firs and Spruce $52

Although we got a slightly smaller tree and drove a bit further than our standard trip to the Hope Depot, I give Richardson Farm 2 “Pine Cones” Up for family atmosphere and holiday fun!

Let me know if you and your family know of any other Christmas Tree Farms near Chicago.
