go learn

Screen shot 2011 12 19 at 4.59.13 PM 150x150 Somersaults, balance beams, trampolines and fun!It will officially be winter this Wednesday!  For those of us who live in Chicago, that means finding ways to  entertain our kiddos, and, lets face it, burn off some of their non-stop energy indoors.  Although we love going to the museums, story times and indoor play spaces, one of my favorite things to do each winter is introduce my kids to a new activity/class.

As if their PR team was reading my mind, I recently received an invitation for my girls to take a trial gymnastics class at the brand new IK Gymnastics facility that opened last month.  Now that my girls are almost three and just turned four, I had been considering a more formal gymnastics class.  My kids LOVE trampolines, and are regularly showing off their somersault skills, so a more structured gymnastics class seemed like the perfect way to have fun indoors and teach the girls some new skills!

Since I have never been to any other gymnastics facilities in Chicago, it is hard for me to compare IK to the other facilities available.  What I can tell you is that the facility is HUGE, brand new, clean, has plenty of parking and that our instructor was amazing.

The instructor did a great job of quickly befriending them and winning their trust.  She also did a surprsingly good job getting the 15 or so toddlers to follow her instructions.  We started with a little obstacle course of things to climb over, slither under, walk across, somersault down and crawl through.  We then moved on to the balance beam.  Next was my kids FAVORITE part of the class, the long trampoline (I am sure there is a real name for this piece of equipment, but it was essentially a 25 yard long trampoline).  My kids LOVED it!  Then we went to a big square trampoline for more jumping fun.  We ended the class with some climbing and swinging on the rings.

What I liked most is that the class was action packed.  We quickly transitioned from one activity to the  next.  They were truly moving and smiling the entire class.  On the way home, my girls were already asking me if they could go back.

Plus, they both took nice long naps…my ultimate litmus test for any new class.  If it tires them out, and we avoid crying and whining during the class, it gets an A in my book!

Picture 8 The inside scoop on Dr. Seuss! One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and Green Eggs and Ham are two of our favorite books.  Not only do my kids love them, but I love them too.  I remember reading them as a kid, and their is something warm and fuzzy about reading the same books to your kids!

If you are a fan of everything Dr. Seuss, you are going to LOVE the new Museum of Science and Industry exhibit, Dr. Seuss & The Art of Invention.  Not only will you enjoy learning a bit more about the genius behind your favorite DrSeuss opening 0153 150x150 The inside scoop on Dr. Seuss!characters, but, in true Museum of Science and Industry fashion, the exhibit is very hands-on.  From hourly science experiments where you can create gooey ooblek to writing your own Seuss-inspired rhyme, your kids will be having so much fun they won’t realize they are learning something too.

IMG 0233 150x150 The inside scoop on Dr. Seuss! My toddlers particularly liked the microscopes at the Horton Sees a Who area and Lorax invention station where they built some cool creations.IMG 0235 150x150 The inside scoop on Dr. Seuss! I have to warn you that the microscopes were a bit challenging to operate, but there were plenty of staff on hand to help out when my two year old pressed too many buttons and messed them up.  My two year old was also a bit leary of the last room.  It was a bit dark for her, but we just turned around and went out the entrance.

My favorite part was learning so many new fun facts, like that Theodor Seuss Geisel, Dr. Seuss, bet his publisher $50 bucks that he could write Green Eggs and Ham in 50 words.  A bet he won by useing 49 one syllable words and one two syllable word, anywhere.  Apparently, he never actually collected on that bet though!  Green Eggs and Ham was first published in 1960, and is the 4th best selling English language book of all time.

There are going to be plenty of cold winter days coming soon, so head to the Museum of Science and Industry and check it out.  Don’t forget, you can get a family pass to the museum at you local Chicago Public Library as part of their Kraft Great Kids Museum Pass program.

Picture 4 Science made fun!Are you looking for a way to get your kiddos interested in science or simply to encourage their natural curiosity about how things work?  Well look no further than Kids Science Labs, Chicago’s newest kid-sized business.  I got a sneak peak yesterday, and can’t wait to bring the kids back for a class.

During my tour of the classrooms, Shegan Campbell, one of the co-founders, gave me the inside scoop on what Kids Science Labs is all about.  Shegan is passionate about children, education and encouraging kids to ask questions.  At Kids Science Lab the focus is on hands-on experiences that foster a child’s natural curiosity about how things work.  From smashing fruit and making slime to building catapults and castles, kids are encouraged to think, experiment and get messy!

They offer classes for kids 2 to 12 years old, and class sizes are kept small (generally an 8 kids to 1 teacher ratio).  Plus, they offer free trial classes.  Love that!  If you are looking for a fun winter birthday party idea, check out their Slime Party or Smashanomics Party.  They share their building with Whole Foods, so they have free indoor parking, an elevator and you can pop over to the Whole Foods for a cup of coffee or your weekly shopping while your kid is in class.

Kids Science Lab officially opens Saturday, September 10th.  Their grand opening party will be from 10am-2pm, and features science demos, hands-on activities, tours, a concert by kindie artist Laura Doherty, food, drinks and more.

A group of girl friends and I just signed our kids up for Hip Hop class at the new Baby Take a Bow dance studio in Roscoe Village.  We were looking for a class that would appeal to our three-year-olds, their younger siblings and was gender neutral.  Plus, who can resist a three year shaking it to Lady Gaga!

Although my two year old seemed to be on her own program during the class (primarily watching herself dance in the mirror and running around), the three-year-olds were really into it.  The instructor was patient, funny and did a great job of talking to them at their level without using that annoyingly high pitch voiced some instructors insist on using. I also loved that she had each child show her something they learned that day in order to get a sticker at the end of class.

The dance studio is adorably decorated, quite large and offers free coffee for parents.  Kristen, the owner, was very flexible and worked hard to accommodate the needs of our group.  They offer all levels of ballet, hip hop, creative movement and are available for private birthday parties.

I’m not sure what I enjoyed more, attending class with my girls or watching them show their dad what they learned when we returned.

It’s registration time for Fall classes. As I was doing my research on what to do this Fall with my girls, I came across a few options that are quite unique and look like a lot of fun.  Don’t get me wrong, my kids love music class, storytime, gymnastics and alike, but part of the fun of living in Chicago with kids is all the options available.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, check out one of these classes offered this Fall.

CircEsteem offers Beginner Circus on Saturdays at 10am.  Beginner Circus focuses on the basic principles of circus: balance, coordination and clowning. Students will learn juggling scarves, balancing feathers, spinning plates, walking on the rolling globe and clowning. They will also be introduced to the tight wire, trampoline, stilts, and aerials, all while building self-esteem and developing a sense teamwork.  An 8 week session will run you $160.  Classes start September 11th.

Menomonee offers Mad Science Secret Agent Lab. Look out 007 (and a 1/2). The Mad Science spy academy is in session! Children will have the opportunity to check out spy equipment and even create their own edible messages! Young investigators will step into the shoes of a detective and uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Classes are appropriate for grades SK-6th and cost $200 for the 8 week session. Classes start September 17th.

The Kids’ Table offers cooking classes for kids of all ages, even toddlers.  In there Tots Can Cook class, two to three year-olds cook alongside a parent or caregiver, discovering that even they can have fun and be successful in preparing simple, yet exciting and healthy recipes. Children get to wash, chop, tear, grate, roll and mix their way through each recipe using child-sized cooking utensils. They encourage the kids to get acquainted with every ingredient, with a lot of touching, smelling and tasting along the way. Classes run for 4 weeks and cost $90.

The Art Institute of Chicago offers a Mini Masters class on most Sundays from 11am-2pm.  The class is free with museum admission, but you must pre-register. Your child will discover works of art on a brief gallery visit through stories, games, and other activities. In the studio, they will create a work of art to take home. This program meets in the Ryan Education Center and travels to the galleries. The class is geared towards children age 3-5 years.

Chicago Botanical Garden offers Little Diggers. The programs give kids ages 2 to 4 the opportunity to explore nature with caregivers.  They’ll learn about fruits & vegetables, discover animals, experience the changing seasons and more!  Each class begins with an interactive group period, followed by time for children to try a variety of hands-on activities.  All classes include a plant potting activity and a walk outdoors or in the Greenhouses. The class meets once a month for four months and cost $64.

The Emerald City Theatre Company offers a number of classes to budding performers as young as 3 including Pirate Boot Camp. If your child loves to explore life above and below the high seas, they’ll love Emerald City’s  swash buckling Pirate Boot Camp. Actors will embark on a journey, as they develop their very own pirate characters, solve treasure hunts, and crack secret codes. Their inspiration will be Melinda Long’s award winning book, How I Became A Pirate. On the final day parents will get to see this high sea adventure! This 14 week class cost $195.

Musical Magic 2 150x150 Musical Magic Fun for all agesMy girls and I recently attended a music class at Musical Magic in Roscoe Village.  I am always looking for sibling classes, and they offer Musical Medley (birth to 4 years old).  Both my one and two year old loved the class.  They really enjoyed playing with the puppets, parachute, bubbles, instruments and a host of other props.  The class has a great pace, and they switch up activities effortelssly.  It really kept both of their attentions, and seemed age appropriate for both of them.

The facility is cozy, cheerful and  VERY clean.  I especially liked their drool bag for toys/props that had been in your child’s mouth.

Best of all, they let you try the class for free.  I always like trying out classes before signing up for the entire series.

This morning I visited Bellybum Boutique , and attended their Dance With Me Toddler class.  If your toddler loves to dance, they will love this class.  The instructor, Malik, has an eclectic mix of music and props to get your little one’s and your booty shaking.  Between jingling hip scarves and maracas, everyone was wiggling and giggling around the room.  The kids were having a great time, and us moms were burning some serious calories.  It took a little while for my two year old to warm up, but once she felt comfortable, she was jumping around the room with a big smile on her face.  My one year old was ready to bounce and dance as soon as the music started, and I had to pry the maraca out of her hands at the end.

It was great to find a class that was appropriate for both of my girls.  With a one and two year old, I have a hard time finding classes we can all attend together.  Bellybum even offers a sibling discount, which us mom’s of two always appreciate. I also loved that they allow drop-ins. I always like to try out a class before I purchase a series.

It seems like the warmer weather is not only drying up our soggy parks, but also the number of FREE days at Chicago family friendly museums and attractions.  Although there are fewer FREE days in Spring and Summer, there are still a number of opportunities to enjoy one of our world class museums for free this April.

Following is a list of FREE days in April.  Please note that free days usually only cover general admission.  If you want to see a special exhibit, you normally have to pay an additional fee.  Be prepared for larger than normal crowds on free days too.  Many local schools plan field trips around the free days.

art institute 150x150 Inspire your little Picasso with a trip to the Chicago Art Institute!Yesterday’s gloomy weather provided the perfect excuse to head down town and check out the photography exhibit on the World’s Fair and explore the new kids education area at the Chicago Art Institute.  Although we had a great time, I have to admit that my little ones are a bit too little (Grace is 2 and Clare is almost 1) for this outing.

The new modern wing is not only beautiful, but has a huge family section called the Ryan Education Center.  There is an indoor play area with blocks, books, art inspired computer games, etc., and it’s open everyday during normal museum hours.  In addition, they have multiple classrooms where they hold educational classes for kids age 3 through 18.  Classes range from Drawing in the Galleries and Family Art Class to Story Time.  They even offer a entire list of programs for teens interested in art.  To get complete details, click here.

Every Saturday and Sunday between 11am-3pm they have a drop in art project in the The Artist’s Studio.  Yesterday the project was making patterns with stamps.  The kids actually made their own stamps (a bit too advanced for my two year old, but 3+ would really enjoy it).

Mini Masters is a class available for children 3 to 5 years old, that runs from 10:30-11:30 every Saturday and Sundays.  It is free with admission, and start off with a story, then a tour of part of the museum and ends with an art project.  For the cost of your admission ($16), your kids can enjoy a great class and the museum.

Chicago Art Institute is dedicated to making art accessible to the community and the families that live in Chicago.  I was blown away by the amazing family facilities and variety of activities available for kids of different ages.  I highly encourage you to check it out with your kids.  Plus, you can get in a little culture for yourself while you’re there!

I’ve known about Stroller Strides for some time, but never tried it out until two weeks ago. I have to admit that I was a bit of a skeptic.  I would not call myself an athlete, but I am someone who enjoys working out and who participates in at least one triathlon a year.  I figured that Stroller Strides would be more social than physical.  Well, my forearms can testify that although there is definitely a social aspect, it is a REAL workout. The classes were a good mix of cardio and strength building, and I definitely had worked up a sweat.

My second hesitation was whether my two year old and 9 month old would be entertained enough in the stroller during the class.  With the help of some crackers and a sippy cup, everyone has been pretty content.  I think they are mesmerized by all the people running around and doing crazy stunts with resistance bands.

The classes are reasonably priced (cheaper than getting a sitter for an hour), the owner and instructors are friendly and supportive, the group of moms participating are at all levels of fitness and have children ranging in age from a few weeks to preschool age.  There is a definite sense of community about the classes.  There is also a free mom’s group/play group each Monday and monthly organized “mom’s night out” events.

Here are the details:

Do you have a budding actor or filmmaker in your house or how about just a film enthusiast?  If so, you won’t want to miss The Chicago International Children’s Film Festival which runs from October 22nd through November 1st.  The event presents more than 260 of the best films and videos for kids, including films made by kids.  More than 100 directors attend screenings to talk with kids.

Families with preschool age children should check out the “My First Movies” special screenings.  Aspiring filmmakers can take advantage of the Take One! Workshops.  These workshops allow kids to work directly with accomplished film professionals.

For a list of screenings, tickets and more information go to www.cicff.org

  • $6.00 for children (2-16) and $9.00 for adults.
  • Individual tickets for weekend screenings can be purchased at the box office 30 minutes prior to a screening or via the CICFF website through Ticketweb.
