It’s registration time for Fall classes. As I was doing my research on what to do this Fall with my girls, I came across a few options that are quite unique and look like a lot of fun.  Don’t get me wrong, my kids love music class, storytime, gymnastics and alike, but part of the fun of living in Chicago with kids is all the options available.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, check out one of these classes offered this Fall.

CircEsteem offers Beginner Circus on Saturdays at 10am.  Beginner Circus focuses on the basic principles of circus: balance, coordination and clowning. Students will learn juggling scarves, balancing feathers, spinning plates, walking on the rolling globe and clowning. They will also be introduced to the tight wire, trampoline, stilts, and aerials, all while building self-esteem and developing a sense teamwork.  An 8 week session will run you $160.  Classes start September 11th.

Menomonee offers Mad Science Secret Agent Lab. Look out 007 (and a 1/2). The Mad Science spy academy is in session! Children will have the opportunity to check out spy equipment and even create their own edible messages! Young investigators will step into the shoes of a detective and uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Classes are appropriate for grades SK-6th and cost $200 for the 8 week session. Classes start September 17th.

The Kids’ Table offers cooking classes for kids of all ages, even toddlers.  In there Tots Can Cook class, two to three year-olds cook alongside a parent or caregiver, discovering that even they can have fun and be successful in preparing simple, yet exciting and healthy recipes. Children get to wash, chop, tear, grate, roll and mix their way through each recipe using child-sized cooking utensils. They encourage the kids to get acquainted with every ingredient, with a lot of touching, smelling and tasting along the way. Classes run for 4 weeks and cost $90.

The Art Institute of Chicago offers a Mini Masters class on most Sundays from 11am-2pm.  The class is free with museum admission, but you must pre-register. Your child will discover works of art on a brief gallery visit through stories, games, and other activities. In the studio, they will create a work of art to take home. This program meets in the Ryan Education Center and travels to the galleries. The class is geared towards children age 3-5 years.

Chicago Botanical Garden offers Little Diggers. The programs give kids ages 2 to 4 the opportunity to explore nature with caregivers.  They’ll learn about fruits & vegetables, discover animals, experience the changing seasons and more!  Each class begins with an interactive group period, followed by time for children to try a variety of hands-on activities.  All classes include a plant potting activity and a walk outdoors or in the Greenhouses. The class meets once a month for four months and cost $64.

The Emerald City Theatre Company offers a number of classes to budding performers as young as 3 including Pirate Boot Camp. If your child loves to explore life above and below the high seas, they’ll love Emerald City’s  swash buckling Pirate Boot Camp. Actors will embark on a journey, as they develop their very own pirate characters, solve treasure hunts, and crack secret codes. Their inspiration will be Melinda Long’s award winning book, How I Became A Pirate. On the final day parents will get to see this high sea adventure! This 14 week class cost $195.

Musical Magic 2 150x150 Musical Magic Fun for all agesMy girls and I recently attended a music class at Musical Magic in Roscoe Village.  I am always looking for sibling classes, and they offer Musical Medley (birth to 4 years old).  Both my one and two year old loved the class.  They really enjoyed playing with the puppets, parachute, bubbles, instruments and a host of other props.  The class has a great pace, and they switch up activities effortelssly.  It really kept both of their attentions, and seemed age appropriate for both of them.

The facility is cozy, cheerful and  VERY clean.  I especially liked their drool bag for toys/props that had been in your child’s mouth.

Best of all, they let you try the class for free.  I always like trying out classes before signing up for the entire series.

  • Where – Musical Magic (2255 W. Roscoe)
  • Class Name – Mixed Medley
  • Cost – Free trial, $152 for 8 week class (10% for siblings)
  • Tip – They offer a 15% referral bonus

This morning I visited Bellybum Boutique , and attended their Dance With Me Toddler class.  If your toddler loves to dance, they will love this class.  The instructor, Malik, has an eclectic mix of music and props to get your little one’s and your booty shaking.  Between jingling hip scarves and maracas, everyone was wiggling and giggling around the room.  The kids were having a great time, and us moms were burning some serious calories.  It took a little while for my two year old to warm up, but once she felt comfortable, she was jumping around the room with a big smile on her face.  My one year old was ready to bounce and dance as soon as the music started, and I had to pry the maraca out of her hands at the end.

It was great to find a class that was appropriate for both of my girls.  With a one and two year old, I have a hard time finding classes we can all attend together.  Bellybum even offers a sibling discount, which us mom’s of two always appreciate. I also loved that they allow drop-ins. I always like to try out a class before I purchase a series.

It seems like the warmer weather is not only drying up our soggy parks, but also the number of FREE days at Chicago family friendly museums and attractions.  Although there are fewer FREE days in Spring and Summer, there are still a number of opportunities to enjoy one of our world class museums for free this April.

Following is a list of FREE days in April.  Please note that free days usually only cover general admission.  If you want to see a special exhibit, you normally have to pay an additional fee.  Be prepared for larger than normal crowds on free days too.  Many local schools plan field trips around the free days.

Looking for hands on fun indoors without spending a bundle?  Check out the Chicago Field Museum on a FREE day or utilize a FREE Kraft Great Kids Museum Pass from your local library!

Over the past month I have visited the Field Museum twice on FREE days.  My Sue1 150x150 Free Indoor Play at the Field Museum!girls and I love exploring the museum’s many great exhibits and checking out Sue the T. Rex.  Our hands down favorite part of the museum is the Crown Family PlayLab.

The PlayLab is like a Children’s museum inside The Field. Your little explorer can dig up dinosaur bones, grind corn in a pueblo, create an art project or, my kids personal favorite, bang IMG 0629 150x150 Free Indoor Play at the Field Museum!on drums and bells from around the world in the Rhythm Section.  It is a huge area and full of things for your kids to explore and best of all TOUCH.

The Field also boasts some great lunch options too including a Corner Bakery restaurant with plenty of highchairs and beautiful views of the lake, a McDonald’s and a cafeteria where you can comfortably eat your sack lunch.

You can also score cheap parking by getting there early and taking advantage of the metered street parking (head down the peninsula on Solidarity Drive towards the Adler Planetarium, and metered parking spots line both sides of the road)

art instituteYesterday’s gloomy weather provided the perfect excuse to head down town and check out the photography exhibit on the World’s Fair and explore the new kids education area at the Chicago Art Institute.  Although we had a great time, I have to admit that my little ones are a bit too little (Grace is 2 and Clare is almost 1) for this outing.

The new modern wing is not only beautiful, but has a huge family section called the Ryan Education Center.  There is an indoor play area with blocks, books, art inspired computer games, etc., and it’s open everyday during normal museum hours.  In addition, they have multiple classrooms where they hold educational classes for kids age 3 through 18.  Classes range from Drawing in the Galleries and Family Art Class to Story Time.  They even offer a entire list of programs for teens interested in art.  To get complete details, click here.

Every Saturday and Sunday between 11am-3pm they have a drop in art project in the The Artist’s Studio.  Yesterday the project was making patterns with stamps.  The kids actually made their own stamps (a bit too advanced for my two year old, but 3+ would really enjoy it).

Mini Masters is a class available for children 3 to 5 years old, that runs from 10:30-11:30 every Saturday and Sundays.  It is free with admission, and start off with a story, then a tour of part of the museum and ends with an art project.  For the cost of your admission ($16), your kids can enjoy a great class and the museum.

Chicago Art Institute is dedicated to making art accessible to the community and the families that live in Chicago.  I was blown away by the amazing family facilities and variety of activities available for kids of different ages.  I highly encourage you to check it out with your kids.  Plus, you can get in a little culture for yourself while you’re there!

Here are the details:

  • Where – 111 South Michigan Ave.
  • Hours of Operation – Mon.-Wed. 10:30am-5:pm, Thur. 10:30am-8pm, Fri. 10:30am-5pm, Sat. and Sun. 10am-5pm
  • Cost – $16 for Chicago residence.  Kids under 14 are FREE.  Thursday nights are also FREE from 5pm-8pm. You can get FREE passes from the local library (Krafts Great Kids Museum Passport).  The institute is FREE the entire month of February.
  • Parking – We scored the metered parking on Congress ($8.50 for two hours), but there is plenty of underground parking across the street at Millennium Park.
  • Check out their Family Calender for a list of current events and classes.
