go give back

Like all moms I know, I love the occasional Girls Night Out!  It is always nice to get dressed up, meet up with some friends, have a few drinks and a lot of laughs.  On Wednesday, February 29th you can do all this, plus give back to a great cause at the Second Annual “Girls Night Out — Go Red for Women” event presented by WBBM Radio, K-HITS, B96 and Sassy Moms in the City!.  All ticket sale proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. Plus, guests are encouraged to bring gently used handbags and professional shoes to help support Dress for Success.

I attended last year and had a blast.  The room was filled with women laughing, eating, drinking, shopping and receiving spa services…what could be better!

On the go is giving away two VIP tickets.  VIP tickets include red carpet treatment, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, (1) raffle ticket ($4000 in prizes), swag bag filled with goodies ($200 value), mini spa services, fashion show and more! To be entered to win, simply comment below or email me (cindymccarthy@onthegoChicago.com) by 5pm Sunday, February 5th.

Well now that Santa has come and gone, I am now faced with the dilemma of where to put all of the new lovely toys he delivered.  Earlier this week I spent some quality time at the Container Store getting new plastic shoe boxes to keep all of the little pieces in. Now that my kids are past the typical choking hazard age, it seems like every gift they got had eight million little pieces.

With every toy in it’s proper container, now I have to find a place to put them.  City living does not equal lots of space, so for every new toy in at least one must go!  This weekend’s project is purging.

Many of these soon to be evicted toys are in great shape, so I plan to donate them to one of the many local charities that accept gently used toys.

If you too are looking to purge your toy room and need to find those toys a good home, here is a list of a few of my favorite local charities that accept use toys.  Also, if you got duplicates or simply got more presents from friends and family then you have room for, I’ve included two that accept new toys.  Please share any you know of that I’ve missed too!

I married into a HUGE family, who loves to give Christmas presents.  We buy for our 21 nieces and nephews and for more than 15 adults.  It’s absolutely crazy, but in a good way.  I love to shop, and I actually like to wrap too.  The one thing I hate to do is ship.  Since NONE of our family even lives in the same state as us, we ship everything.  Unfortunately, standing in line at the Post Office seems to suck the holiday spirit right out of me!

So outside of my “Bah Humbug” attitude about shipping, I love checking gifts off my Christmas list.  Especially when I can find something that is not only a great gift, but benefits a charity or non-profit too.  What better way to get into the holiday spirit, than buying gifts that actually give something back too!

Here are some local and national options for gifts that give twice.  If you know of any other great holiday gifts that give back, please share them via the comment section below.

Halloween Candy 21 150x150 Donate your Halloween candy to the troops! With Veterans Day this Friday, November 11th, its a great time to teach your kiddos about honoring and giving back to the men and women who serve and protect our country.  One small token of appreciation that little ones can do is ship all of their excess candy to the troops through  Operation Gratitude’s  Halloween Candy Give Back.

We participated last year, and it was a great way for me to introduce my children to the idea of giving back.  Plus, an added benefit was that I got all of the temptation out of my house.  I have ZERO self control when it comes to Skittles and M&Ms.  The two GIANT bags of candy in our kitchen is truly more than I can resist!

Here is how we do it in my house. After a week of indulgence, we each pick out three more pieces of candy to enjoy.  Then we pack the rest up along with some homemade thank you cards and mail it to Operation Gratitude. This year, Operation Gratitude is also collecting toothbrushes and toothpaste for the toops, so we are going to toss a few of those in too.

Neighborhood Parent’s Network is one of our favorite kid-sized organizations here in the city. Over the past three years of navigating motherhood and urban life with kids, I have turned to NPN for everything from help finding our amazing nanny to how to choose the right pre-school for our family.  Not to mention the incredible friendships I formed with moms from my NPN working new moms group I joined shortly after having my first daughter.

Given all we’ve gotten from NPN, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to give something back to the organization.  NPN’s Spring Auction is here, and on the go has partnered with some of our favorite kid-sized businesses in Chicago to create two great packages. In addition to our two packages, the Spring Auction has more than 170 amazing items up for bid including everything fromWiggleworms classes to Cubs tickets.

My kids have two sets of grandparents, six sets of aunts and uncles and two sets of great aunts and uncles….needless to say, we have a big family, which means lots and lots of presents.  You don’t hear my girls complaining, but our small city house is about to burst at its seems with toys.  This morning I had to explain to my now three year old that for every new toy we bring in, one must GO!  She did not love the idea at first, but the shine of playing with her new toys, quickly took away the sting of losing a few of the ones she rarely even touches anymore.

If you too are looking to downsize your current selection of toys, or if your little ones got so many new toys you want to share the loot with the less fortunate, here are a few local charities that accept new and gently used toys.

I recently learned of an amazing local charity, Bundle of Joy Diaper Bank, which collects diapers and distributes them to the MANY children in the Chicagoland area in need.

Did you know:

  • Diapers are one of the most frequently requested items at Chicago’s food pantries?
  • Families cannot use government aid (food stamps or WIC) to purchase diapers?
  • Most subsidized daycare facilities require parents to provide disposable diapers?
  • 33% of Chicago’s children live below the poverty level and a shocking 59% live in low income families!

If you are like me, you stock up on diapers and usually have a few packages of leftover diapers that are too small when your child grows and changes sizes.  Well say hello to the warm fuzzy you feel when you help someone in need and goodbye to those too small diapers!  Bundle of Joy has many convenient collection sites around the city including one of my favorite stores, Flourish (3020 N. Lincoln).  Click here for a complete list of collection locations.

If you would like to organize a diaper drive, click here or email bundleofjoydiaperbank@gmail.com.
